LOUDER THAN MY WORDS.

seinabosey
It’s a rare tier of artists who come on the scene with a single as immediate — and immediately hall-of-fame — as Seinabo Sey’s ecstatic and electrified “Younger,” and it’s an even smaller group that manages to match the incandescence on their second try. But here comes Sey with another bombshell in “Hard Time,” produced (like “Younger,” and Mapei’s “Don’t Wait”) by Magnus Lidehall, who just might be the most impressive new producer on the scene right now. Here’s another beat that marks its place almost violently, rolling through the song like a lazy, menacing line of wildfire as the melody boomerangs back and forth: Sey’s voice loops into an incantation over a ghostly chorus, releasing and calling back a darkness we last saw in the hands of Florence Welch and Adele. By the end, “Hard Time” has built itself into a quiet riot, and Sey’s flag is up and blazing: she’s somehow, masterfully, raised both expectation and reward.
