BLINDED BY THE THINGS I COULDN’T SEE.

We fell in love with Psychologist a few years back when he first surfaced on early single “When Particles Collide” (which has since disappeared from the internet but we suspect will rise again soon), and then all over again this week upon receipt of his latest masterpiece. Brand new single “Worlds Away” is mad scientist off-the-wall pop at its finest, and its accompanying video – written and directed entirely by Psychologist’s Iain Woods himself – is quite possibly the most brilliant self-made video we’ve ever come across. Taking all the creepiest elements of German Expressionist cinema and injecting them with modern music video references aplenty (including an especially amazing group choreography section in the finale), it’s a 10 out of 10 oddball masterpiece and yet another triumph in the what’s shaping up to be one of the more compelling concept-driven campaigns we can remember.

“Worlds Away” is the lead single off Psychologist’s forthcoming debut full-length Autophobe (coming January 1st) – a concept album about the greatest friendship of all time: the mind and the body. The production weaves a tapestry of found and home-made samples from sources that are in one way or another pertinent to the history of psychology and neurology, with strings for the record recorded entirely at Kingsley Hall (home of RD Laing’s controversial 1965 schizophrenia experiment), and all trumpets recorded in Sigmund Freud’s bedroom. It’s all a bit too genius for us to even handle, and further proof that Psychologist is one of the more impressive creative minds of our time. Feast your eyes and ears on “Worlds Away” above and below, and keep a keen eye on Psychologist in the months to come. Something tells us there’s plenty more genius where this came from.
