Mating Ritual is a new solo outfit from LA, featuring Pacific Air‘s Ryan Lawhon on a brand new personal odyssey. After a promising string of initial singles, Lawhon is back today with “Hum Hum” and we have to be honest with you, it’s kind of a gamechanger. “Hum Hum” is the perfect song title in a sense, in how it lures you in but doesn’t even remotely hint at the full grandeur of what’s to come. Driving guitars, unrelenting drums and anthemic vocals all join hands in perfect harmony here, as Lawhon strikes the perfect balance between the rollicking brilliance of “Black Skinhead” and Yeasayer’s early output – think “2080” streamlined for maximum radio impact – and further carves out a place for himself in A&R meetings nationwide.
