CHALK IT UP TO PROVIDENCE.

It’s always been love at first listen with Cathedrals, whose first offering “Unbound” was one of the most arresting debuts we heard last year. Now, with their alchemically perfect follow-up “Harlem,” the San Francisco duo is flashing stratospheric ambition and effortless instincts to match. “Harlem” opens with an angel glow that melts and thrills over a prickly Pixies-lite guitar loop, releasing waves of technicolor melody and dark, ardent harmony that interlock and transform each other as the song expands into a breathless, quixotic dream. Then the heartbeat quickens and it’s off to the races, as the guitars roar to life and propel the track to a thrilling conclusion. Try to keep your heart out of “Harlem,” we dare you.
